Horses Set Free During Fire at Pimlico Course

BALTIMORE — Approximately 20 to 30 horses escaped injury after a small fire broke out Monday night at the Pimlico Race Course.
The fire started in some bales of hay and straw, Baltimore Battalion Chief Michael Kernan said. Kernan said the cause of the blaze had not been determined.
Lt. Frank Branish of Pimlico security said two horses refused to leave the barn, but the rest were set free by two Baltimore police patrol officers who were nearby when the fire started. The two panicked horses later were freed.
Kernan estimated damage at $2,000 to the structure.
The fire is the second in as many weeks, Kernan said.
