JIDDA : On the Gulf Watch

President Bush heads for the Mideast on Wednesday fora 44-hour visit meant to shore up support for his Gulf policy on three fronts.
He’ll hear in person from three Arab pillars of the anti-Iraqi coalition, meeting in Jidda with the Emir of Kuwait, Sheik Jabbar al Ahmed al Sabah, and with Saudi King Fahd before stopping in Cairo to see Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.
A shared Thanksgiving with the troops is intended to bolster support back home and to boost the morale of the men in the field. But White House officials say the President also wants an up-close look at the problems the troops and their commanders face. Several more extravagant military demonstrations were vetoed to give Bush more time with the GIs.
