Accidents in Angeles Forest

The front-page article “Forest’s Fatal Toll on Visitors” (Nov. 10) left me somewhat bemused, considering the resounding environmental apathy one must infer from the vote on the recent ballot measures such as Prop. 128. Even the article presented a picture of the Angeles National Forest as a convenient party ground for those who have to enhance their communion with the wilderness by the consumption of alcoholic beverages.
Anyone who has followed the litter trails in ANF could not fail to understand why the dedicated Forest Service personnel who maintain the area might have an “attitude” about the public, and to make them the scapegoats for public carelessness is comparable to making the CHP responsible for damages and injuries inflicted by drunk drivers.
The whole concept of setting aside national forest preserves should be to maintain a natural, unspoiled environment for the public. Those who want signs, billboards and call boxes in every canyon and ridge should stick to the freeways.
