WORLD IN BRIEF : NORTHERN IRELAND : IRA’s Biggest Bomb Fails to Explode

The Irish Republican Army forced a kidnaped driver to deliver the biggest bomb it has ever used against British troops in Northern Ireland, police said. But the “human bomb” attack against a security checkpoint near Rosslea failed when the driver of a van packed with 3,300 pounds of explosives warned security forces, and only the detonator exploded. The driver and soldiers were unhurt.
