COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Irvine Women Stop Monmouth, End Losing Streak

UC Irvine ended a 26-game losing streak by defeating Monmouth College, 69-57, in the Disneyland-Freedom Bowl women’s basketball tournament Friday at UC Irvine.
Irvine’s last victory was 59-57 over Southern Utah State on Dec. 8, 1989. It was also Irvine’s first home victory since it beat UC Santa Barbara, 64-50, on Feb. 18, 1989.
Kathy Lizarraga scored 23 points for Irvine (1-2), and Geanine Hobbs scored 13. Tracey Robinson had 19 points for Monmouth (0-2).
In nonconference men’s basketball:
Hayward 91, Chapman 72--Mark Lawrence scored 24 of his game-high 31 points in the first half for host Hayward. Hayward (2-4) took a 52-35 halftime lead by shooting 60.7% from the field.
Rog Middleton scored 18, and Chris Martin scored 14 coming off the bench for Chapman (3-1).
Marvin Prather scored 24 and Chris Ortiz 18 for Hayward.
UC Riverside 133, Pacific Christian 46--Gene Altamirano, from Rancho Santiago College and Los Amigos High School, scored 23 points to lead UC Riverside in a second-round game. Kenny Kao had 12 points for Pacific Christian.
In the Mid-American Nazarene men’s basketball tournament:
Southern California College 101, Union College (Neb.) 58--Kyle Campanelli had 21 points, and Mike Henjum had 17 for Southern California College. The Vanguards (4-2) had 25 steals and forced 33 turnovers.
