Gillette Threatens To Close Plant: The consumer products firm is threatening to close the world’s largest razor blade plant if Boston bans ozone-depleting chemicals. The city is considering outlawing chemicals that deplete the ozone layer protecting the Earth from damaging rays from the sun. Gillette Vice Chairman Joseph E. Mullaney said the ban would put the company at a competitive disadvantage, and if the bill is adopted, Gillette will close its South Boston plant next year. The plant employs 3,100.
