Golden West Upends Grossmont

Golden West College defeated defending state women’s volleyball champion Grossmont, 2-15, 15-12, 15-8, 15-9, in Sunday’s finals of the California Community College State Championships at Hancock College in Santa Maria.
Grossmont (23-6) opened the day in the losers bracket and responded with victories over Cerritos, 15-13, 15-4, 15-8, and DeAnza, 10-15, 15-4, 10-15, 15-4, 15-6. DeAnza had beaten Grossmont earlier in the double-elimination tournament.
Grossmont had two players, outside hitters Jeni Murrell and Kristin Jones, named to the all-tournament team.
RUNNING
Steve McCormick of San Diego finished fifth in the eighth annual California International Marathon in Sacramento. McCormick clocked 2 hours 18 minutes 6 seconds and won $1,000. Winner Peter Renner of New Zealand (2:12:35) won $8,000.
Matt Clayton of Imperial Beach also finished in the top 10, placing ninth in 2:19:48.
