The Sidelines : Martinez Accepts Expo Contract

ROSEMONT, Ill. — Right-hander Dennis Martinez agreed today on a three-year, $9.25-million contract with the Montreal Expos.
Martinez, 35, was 10-11 with a 2.95 earned-run average for the Expos in 1990 and was selected to the All-Star team for the first time in his career. The new contract replaces the final year of a two-year extension signed before the 1990 season.
Expos General Manager Dave Dombrowski said he feared that Martinez was going to be declared a “new-look” free agent when a collusion agreement is reached later in the week.
“We felt we could not go into the season without our No. 1 pitcher,” Dombrowski said. “We needed to sign him. He’s our No. 1 man.”
Martinez has a 55-41 record with the Expos in five seasons and is 163-134 lifetime.
