Malibu Mavens: “Doonesbury” creator Garry Trudeau says Malibu beaches are the only place for cartoon characters Boopsie and B.D. But why Malibu? “Boopsie and B.D. have been living in Malibu for some time. There is a personal connection--I lived there for three summers during the ‘70s,” Trudeau wrote in a letter to Manley D. Witten, editor of The Malibu Times. “What gives?” Witten asked after Trudeau mentioned Malibu in three “Doonesbury” strips. On Oct. 11, “Doonesbury” mentioned a photo shoot in Malibu; on Sept. 7, B.D. was “in Malibu, and in 48 hours, I’ll be sitting in a desert 12,000 miles away”; on Aug. 4, Malibu was the only place Boopsie and B.D. could live.
