BIGGER LOSSES: Shoplifting is up in the county (above), but nationally, while more than 93% of people caught shoplifting are customers, “the biggest culprits are employees,” says Patricia Murphy, an Irvine retail consultant. . . . Nationwide last year, customers caught stealing had each nabbed an average of $196 in goods, but employees caught averaged $1,350. . . . The most common ploys? Faking refunds and undercharging friends.
