Germany’s Gunda Kleeman set a world record in the women’s 3,000 meters in a World Cup speedskating meet at Calgary, breaking the mark set by her long-time idol, Yvonne Van Gennip of the Netherlands. Kleeman’s time of 4:10.80 was more than a second better than the mark of 4:11.94 set by Van Gennip, a triple gold medalist at the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics. Van Gennip finished third in 4:21.06, well behind second-place Heike Warnicke, also of Germany.
