Feb. 25 Trial Date Set for Suspect in Attack on Girl

SANTA ANA — A Stanton man was arraigned in Superior Court on Thursday for allegedly throwing a piece of glass that left Amber Jefferson, a 15-year-old Garden Grove cheerleader, with a deep gash down one side of her face.

Judge Myron Brown ordered that Kurt David Wimberly, 18, stand trial Feb. 25.

Wimberly is charged with felony mayhem and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to inflict great bodily harm stemming from an Aug. 6 fight between two groups of young people outside his home. He also faces charges on misdemeanor counts of assault with a deadly weapon, assault and battery.

Prosecutors charge that Wimberly threw an ashtray, a knife and a piece of glass from his patio, striking Amber, after one of her friends broke out the windows at his Cerritos Avenue home. Wimberly has been in jail since shortly after the incident.

He was the only person in the fight, which police say involved up to 12 people, to be charged with a felony. But three others, including two people from Wimberly’s group and one from Amber’s, have been charged with misdemeanors.

Wimberly’s father, Earl, 42, is accused of assault and exhibiting a deadly weapon; Louis Jones, 19, is accused of malicious mischief and fighting in public. Both are scheduled to stand trial Jan. 7.

A defendant from Amber’s group, Ananda Das McClure, has pleaded guilty to misdemeanor fighting in public. He was fined $150 and sentenced to three years’ probation.
