CYPRESS — Walter Bowman was chosen as mayor this week, beating out fellow council member Gail H. Kerry for the position.
Bowman, a real-estate agent, was nominated by former Mayor Cecilia L. Age. Casting votes in his favor were Age and newly elected Councilman Richard Partin. Bowman received three votes, including his own.
“I plan on representing all of the interests in the community,” said Bowman, who narrowly regained his council seat in November.
Kerry, who was nominated for the position by newcomer Joyce C. Nicholson, was backed by members of Concerned Citizens of Cypress. Nicholson is the president of the citizens’ group.
Kerry was elected to the council in 1985 and was instrumental in defeating a proposal to build a large industrial park in one of the last open spaces in the city.
