GIRLS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Waggoner’s Free Throws Put Canyon in Title Game

Erin Waggoner made two free throws with 17 seconds left to play, giving Canyon a 53-51 victory over Long Beach Jordan in a championship semifinal of the Canyon High School girls’ basketball tournament.
Waggoner finished with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Rona Rathod scored 16 for Canyon (4-2).
In another Canyon tournament game:
Whittier Christian 36, Sunny Hills 27--Cynthia Williams scored 10 to lead Whittier Christian (3-1) in a consolation semifinal. Shannon Brown scored 10 for Sunny Hills (2-3).
In the Artesia tournament:
Kennedy 53, Banning 34--Valerie Ruiz had 30 points and 10 steals for Kennedy (6-1), which won the consolation title. Ruiz was selected to the all-tournament team.
In the Brea-Olinda tournament:
Tustin 60, Corona 30--Wanda Sequeira scored 17 and Sylvia Salapski added 13 for Tustin (5-2) in the consolation round.
In the Valley Christian tournament:
Woodbridge 53, Pius X 40--Deanna Harry scored 27 points and had 10 rebounds to lead Woodbridge (5-1).
In the Santa Ana Valley tournament:
El Modena 55, Garden Grove 44--Michelle Duckworth scored 15 and Kathy Farina added 10 for El Modena (5-0) in a championship semifinal.
In a nonleague game:
Magnolia 72, Buena Park 48--Joyce Pe’a had 21 points, 14 rebounds and nine assists for host Magnolia (4-1). Yolanda Hearvey scored 10 points, grabbed 13 rebounds and had nine assists for Magnolia. Sandy Bodnar scored 14 for Buena Park (3-4).
