A prisoner escaped from the Central Detention Facility only hours after he had been sentenced to 10 years in prison for assault with a deadly weapon, the Sheriff’s Department said.
Robert Anthony O’Donnell of San Diego escaped Friday from the downtown facility sometime between 6:30 a.m. and 3 p.m., sheriff’s deputies said, and was discovered missing during the night count procedures.
O’Donnell was one of two prisoners who escaped from sheriff’s custody on Friday. Gary Tanara escaped after being admitted to San Diego General Hospital for injuries to his ribs.
Sheriff’s officials believe that O’Donnell, who was arrested in July, may have escaped by mingling with other inmates who were being released.
O’Donnell is Caucasian, 5-foot, 8-inches tall, with brown hair and blue eyes. He was last seen wearing a blue sports jacket and tan pants.
