Shelters for the Homeless Open as Mercury Plunges

A forecast for overnight temperatures dipping into the 40s prompted city officials Sunday to open the city’s emergency homeless shelters for a second night.
Those in need of shelter were advised to call a hotline, 1-(800) 548-6047, to find out pickup points for transportation to shelters. The pickup points are in the San Fernando Valley, Wilmington-San Pedro and Venice-West Los Angeles.
Saturday night more than 300 people stayed in five shelters. The five locations, downtown, in the South-Central and Harbor area neighborhoods of the city, Hollywood, West Los Angeles and the San Fernando Valley are equipped to feed and shelter 1,200 people.
From November to mid-December, the city offers shelter to the homeless if temperatures are expected to dip to 40 degrees or if rain is forecast with temperatures projected to drop below 50 degrees.
Under a new program that begins today, homeless people will be allowed to stay in a shelter for up to two months.
