NEW YORK — A 13-year-old girl was recovering today from bullet wounds sustained on a Brooklyn street when a masked gunman opened fire on her and two friends because he wanted their nylon jackets, authorities said.
The violence brought to 10 the number of people shot over a coat in the New York area since the beginning of the month, police said. Five of those people have died.
The girl suffered a bullet wound to the thigh.
She and two of her friends were accosted by a ski-mask clad gunman and an accomplice as the trio walked down a street in Brownsville, Police Sgt. Grace Ridley said.
The girls initially refused the robbers’ demands for their nylon jackets--which had the word Columbia on them--but two of them finally relented after the armed bandit fired a shot in the air. As the two robbers fled, the gunman randomly fired three more shots, one of which hit the 13-year-old girl.
