From Times Staff and Wire reports
Construction is about one-third finished on the new national cemetery being developed in the western San Joaquin Valley. When completed, the $10.5-million cemetery in rolling hills northwest of Los Banos will mark the first time graves have been readily accessible for Northern California veterans in nearly three decades. Golden Gate National Cemetery near San Francisco ran out of room in 1962 but still has space for cremated remains, said Dennis P. Gura, director of the new facility.
