PACIFICA TOURNAMENT : Santa Margarita Wins Title Game

GARDEN GROVE — Mike Carpenter scored 34 points as Santa Margarita High School won the Pacifica tournament Saturday night with a 98-86 victory over the host Mariners.
Carpenter, the tournament MVP, scored 18 points in the first half and was one of four Eagles to score in double figures. Santa Margarita (10-3) limited the Mariners to two baskets in the second quarter and led, 46-29, at halftime.
Pacifica (4-4) stayed close behind the scoring tandem of Larry Nagata and Kevin Gaughen, who combined for more than half of the Mariners’ points. Nagata finished with 33 points and Gaughen, who was 0 for 10 from the floor in the first half, finished with 26.
Dan Bathey scored 18 points, and teammates Chris Hacker and Sean Stephenson added 10 each for Santa Margarita.
In other tournament games:
Pius X 60, Troy 47--Michael O’Quinn scored 17 points and helped spark a 13-point third-quarter run to lead the Warriors in the third-place game. Pius X led, 24-21, at halftime, but outscored Troy, 23-10, in the third quarter to secure the victory. Randy Abbott led Troy with 13 points, and Jim Falletta had 10.
Miraleste 67, Magnolia 59--Aaron Williams scored 14 points to lead the Sentinels in the consolation championship game. Miraleste’s defense held all-tournament selection Andy Walin to six points as Magnolia’s second half rally fell short.
