Army Lieutenant Dies in Apparent Suicide

EASTERN SAUDI ARABIA — A U.S. Army officer serving in the Persian Gulf apparently committed suicide by shooting himself with his M-16 rifle.
Military officials Tuesday identified the soldier as 1st Lt. Shannon Kelly, 23, a member of the 101st Airborne Division from Gulf Breeze, Fla.
If confirmed, it would be the second suicide among U.S. soldiers in Operation Desert Shield.
A total of 87 U.S. military personnel have died so far in the operation.
