VENTURA : 5 Latinos to Receive Leadership Awards

An orchestra conductor, an elementary school teacher, a business leader, a longtime supporter of youth activities and a paramedic will be presented the 1991 Latino Leadership Awards on Jan 25.
El Concilio del Condado de Ventura, a Latino advocacy organization in Oxnard, announced Thursday that it will honor Frank Salazar, founding conductor of the Ventura County Symphony Orchestra; Carmen Cortez, a reading specialist at Oxnard Elementary School District; Victor Salas, founder of the Santa Paula Mexican American Chamber of Commerce; Al Soliz, a longtime member of the Oxnard Boys and Girls Club; and Orlando Larios, a paramedic.
The awards will be presented during the second annual Latino Awards Dinner at the Double Tree Hotel in Ventura. Admission will be $25, and all proceeds will go to El Concilio’s youth violence prevention project and after-school tutoring program.
The award recipients have “made outstanding contributions in the areas of business, cultural arts, education, community service and youth leadership,” according to a statement by El Concilio Executive Director Marcos Vargas.
The five winners were selected by El Concilio’s 21 directors.
