Optimistic Tone for Steelworkers Talks: Negotiators for USX Corp. and the United Steelworkers union said they are optimistic they will reach a contract for 18,000 workers by a Jan. 31 deadline. The bargaining teams are scheduled to sit down again Wednesday in Pittsburgh to resume talks that began ahead of schedule in October. The early negotiations were suspended Nov. 11 with the parties in disagreement, but informal discussions were held between a small team from each side last month.
