Commenting on Film Commentary

The Los Angeles Film Critics Assn. has obviously been bitten by the “gangster bug,” which seems to have bitten all of Hollywood lately. To award “GoodFellas,” an unmoving, uninteresting, uneven, embarrassingly violent depiction of up-and-coming hoods in the Mafia, first prize in so many categories is absurd. Maybe the movie being directed by every critic’s favorite, Martin Scorsese, had something to do with the decision.
To give the beautifully directed, acted, photographed and scripted epic “Dances With Wolves” second place is inexcusable. Critics dislike actors to succeed in more than one venue of motion-picture making and probably were not interested in voting for a movie directed by a mere actor, Kevin Costner.
