Columbia Pictures May Open Park: Columbia Pictures Entertainment has reportedly received the OK from its Japanese owners to open a Sonyland amusement park to compete in Southern California with the Disneyland and Universal Studios theme parks. Details on cost, a construction timetable and location for the Sonyland theme park won’t be available for several months, the industry publication Daily Variety reported. Paul Schaefer, executive vice president of corporate affairs for Columbia who is spearheading the project, was in New York on Tuesday and didn’t immediately return telephone calls.
