Use of Tahoe Name Rejected

RENO — The Nevada Board of Geographic Names voted Tuesday against a proposal by the casino-dominated community of Stateline to change its name to Lake Tahoe, Nev.
In a unanimous vote, the board said the name Lake Tahoe belongs to the entire region and should not become the sole property of a single community.
Board Chairwoman Susan Tingley said the recommendation will be forwarded to the federal board of geographic names, which has the final say.
South shore voters last May supported the name change for the casino core.
But north shore communities opposed the bid, accusing Stateline leaders of tying to rob them of their generic claim to the region.
“While I agree that the south shore is recognized as Lake Tahoe, so is the north shore,” board member and Nevada Archivist Guy Rocha said.
