NATION : 2 Sentenced in Attack on Jogger

NEW YORK — Central Park rapist Kevin Richardson today received the maximum jail term of five to 10 years and co-defendant Kharey Wise received five to 15 years for the brutal 1989 attack on a jogger in the park.

State Supreme Court Justice Thomas Galligan said the acts for which the two teens were convicted were “cowardly, mindless, mob-induced violence.” Earlier, both defendants had tearfully declared their innocence to the judge.

Richardson, who was 14 at the time of the attack, was sentenced as a juvenile. Wise, the first defendant sentenced as an adult, could have been sentenced to 26 years in prison.

Five youths have been convicted in connection with the case, in which a 30-year-old investment banker was assaulted, dragged into the woods and raped while on her nightly jog through Central Park.
