Residents Use Ropes to Flee Manila Fire

MANILA — Residents slid down ropes to escape a fire today in a high-rise office and residential building, officials said. At least four people were injured.
The blaze broke out at 11:30 a.m. on the 18th floor of the 22-story building along Manila’s seaside Roxas Boulevard.
A 30-year-old man broke his right leg when he slid uncontrolled down a rope harness from the sixth floor of the building while cradling his 8-month-old niece, said hospital officials. The child, wrapped in a heavy blanket and towels, suffered scrapes.
A 22-year-old woman was hospitalized for smoke inhalation and a firefighter was hurt when he was hit by a fire hose, the officials added.
