A 2-month-old baby pulled from a Fullerton apartment fire by neighbors died Wednesday morning at UCI Medical Center, apparently of burns suffered in the blaze.
“I’m truly sorry. The only thing I can say is maybe if I’d gotten in there sooner,” said Ben Seyed, one of the men who pulled the child from the inferno.
“Everybody was telling me yesterday, ‘Congratulations, you did a good job,’ ” Seyed said. “The main thing I was trying to do was to forget about what I saw.”
Terrance Gray, who suffered second- and third-degree burns, died at 9:45 a.m. in the pediatric intensive care unit, said hospital spokeswoman Fran Tardiff. The cause of death is pending, a spokesman for the coroner’s office said.
Terrance’s mother, LaDawne Bonner, 20, was baby-sitting at the apartment when the fire broke out. Two other toddlers, Rishawn Jason, 3, also Bonner’s son, and Junior Tali, 2, escaped uninjured.
Meanwhile, an investigation into the cause of the blaze continues, although fire officials probably will delay interviewing the boy’s mother. “We want to be sensitive to her loss,” a city spokeswoman said.
