World IN BRIEF : PORTUGAL : Soares Wins Second Term in Landslide

President Mario Soares was elected to a second five-year term by a landslide. “It’s a victory of civic spirit, tolerance and freedom,” he told a cheering crowd of several thousand supporters at his Lisbon campaign headquarters. With most returns in, the 67-year-old socialist had captured 70.4% of the vote. His two closest rivals, right-of-center candidate Basilio Horta and Carlos Carvalhas, a Communist, got 14.1% and 12.9% respectively. Extreme-left candidate Carlos Marques polled 2.6%.
