As the Jan. 15 United Nations deadline for an Iraqi withdrawal from Kuwait approached, the standoff in the Persian Gulf became front page news even in countries that otherwise had little immediate stake in the conflict. Editorial writers crafted thousands of words in dozens of languages.
Another branch of the global journalistic profession--one whose work is less often seen in the United States--also got in its licks. These were the editorial cartoonists, whose efforts require no interpretation.
