WEST COAST CONFERENCE ROUNDUP : St. Mary’s Slips Past Santa Clara

Allen Caveness scored on a follow shot with three seconds left Saturday to give St. Mary’s a 57-55 upset of Santa Clara in a West Coast Conference game at Santa Clara.
The loss knocked Santa Clara (12-7 overall, 3-2 in the WCC) out of a tie for first place with San Diego in the league.
St. Mary’s (6-12, 2-3) trailed, 54-50, with 3:27 left, but a three-point shot by Bamberger and two free throws by Martell Bland put the Gaels ahead, 55-54.
A free throw by Rhea Taylor, who scored 24 points, got the Broncos even.
Eric Bamberger scored 19 points for St. Mary’s.
San Diego 90, USF 68--The Toreros gained sole possession of the conference lead by winning at San Diego.
Anthony Thomas had 24 points for San Diego (11-6, 4-1).
Tim Owens scored 20 for USF (10-8, 3-2).
Portland 67, Gonzaga 63--Ron Deaton scored four points in the final 1:14 and the Pilots beat the Bulldogs (10-7, 3-1) at Portland.
Deaton’s layup with 1:14 left gave Portland (4-13, 2-2) a 64-63 lead, and he added two free throws with 15 seconds remaining.
