NATION IN BRIEF : WASHINGTON, D.C. : Bush Plans More Aid for Women, Infants

President Bush will propose more funding in his 1992 budget for food assistance to poor mothers, pregnant women, infants and children. At present, the program assists 50% to 60% of eligible women and children, and its proponents said that, even with the increase, it will not reach all of the eligible poor. Sources in Washington confirmed that an increase will be sought but refused to say how big it will be. The Wall Street Journal characterized it as “substantial.” Congress allotted $2.35 billion for the program this fiscal year, and it served 4.5 million people a month in 1990.
