LAGUNA BEACH : Bill Targeting Bias Against Gays Backed

The City Council has unanimously endorsed a state Assembly bill that would make it illegal for employers and landlords to discriminate against employees and tenants because of sexual orientation.
Under the California Fair Employment and Housing Act, it is illegal to discriminate for a wide range of reasons, including age, race, sex, religion or marital status. Assembly Bill 101 would include sexual orientation as one of the unlawful bases for discrimination.
Laguna Beach already has a similar anti-discrimination law on the books. For that reason and because prejudice against gays continues to surface, Councilman Robert F. Gentry asked his colleagues to support the bill and to encourage the state officials to do the same.
