Debating U.S. Involvement in Gulf Conflict

Thank you for the thoughtful and comprehensive article by Anthony Day “Morality, War: Do They Mix?” (Column One, Jan. 15). The urgency of a universal debate on what constitutes a “just war” in light of the terrible destructive power of today’s “smart” weapons is desperately needed.
As a Catholic, I am persuaded to return to the philosophy of early church members who, in the first 300 years of Christianity, followed the true message of Jesus Christ by refusing to pay taxes or take part in any war of the Roman Empire.
I hope all religions unify and encourage their congregations to protest this war in a peaceful manner. In order to prevent the escalation of this horror and bring our troops home with their minds and bodies intact, we need the participation of everyone.
