N.Y. Times, Union Fail to Reach Agreement: Negotiations between the New York Times and the union representing its truck drivers have failed to produce an agreement on how to operate the newspaper’s new multimillion-dollar automated printing plant, the newspaper reported. As a result, the paper is exercising its right to submit the dispute to binding arbitration and has withdrawn its final offer to the Newspaper & Mail Deliverers Union. Times management has said the new $450-million plant in Edison, N.J., will not open until agreements are reached between the newspaper and seven unions representing the plant’s future workers.
