A witness who testified against Dave Winfield in his divorce case in Houston was recruited by indicted gambler Howard Spira, the outfielder’s lawyer said. The Angel outfielder appeared at the First Court of Appeals to challenge the divorce award to Sandra Renfro. Last March, the former Houston flight attendant was awarded $1.6 million plus $3,500 a month in child support by State District Judge Allen J. Daggett.
Tom Alexander, Winfield’s lawyer, challenged the testimony of Pat Carouso, the player’s former secretary. Alexander said Carouso was recruited as a witness by Spira, who claims he did public relations work for the David M. Winfield Foundation.
