NHL PLAYOFFS : Coffey Is Back, Pietrangelo Perfect in Penguin Victory

PITTSBURGH — With Paul Coffey unexpectedly back on the ice and Frank Pietrangelo turning back 27 shots for his first playoff shutout, the Penguins beat the New Jersey Devils, 4-0, Monday night to win Game 7 of their Patrick Division semifinal series.
Jiri Hrdina scored twice and Mario Lemieux had a goal before sitting out the final two periods with back spasms as the Penguins took a 3-0 lead in the second period.
Coffey, expected to miss the rest of the playoffs with bleeding behind his left retina, was cleared to play by team doctors earlier in the day and provided an emotional lift by playing his regular shifts wearing a protective facemask. He scored the Penguins’ fourth goal from the top of the right circle.
The regular-season champion Penguins will remain at home to open the division finals Wednesday night against Washington, which eliminated the New York Rangers in six games.
