New York Fog Stops Padres and Game

It is tough enough to hit Dwight Gooden on a clear night. In a fog, it’s virtually impossible.
A thick fog, which stopped play for more than 1 1/2 hours after six innings Tuesday night at New York, halted play for good in the seventh.
Gooden (3-1) gave up only three hits in six innings and the Mets beat the San Diego Padres, 6-3. The fog rolled back in after the Padres batted in the seventh. It goes in the books as a victory for the Mets.
Although he walked five in the fog that was around most of the game, Gooden struck out seven.
His catcher, Rick Cerone, didn’t have any trouble seeing. He was three for three, scored two runs and drove in another.
