Loews Corp.: The diversified insurance and tobacco company reported first-quarter net income of $136 million, down 41% from $223.7 million in the year-ago period. The New York-based company had revenue of $3.2 billion, an 8% increase over last year. The company said first-quarter profit in 1990 was aided by $70.4 million from the sale of three oil tankers.
