The teen-age driver convicted of murdering a 17-year-old boy in a 1989 Mira Mesa drive-by shooting was sentenced Wednesday to an unspecified term in the California Youth Authority.

The CYA and the probation department recommended that Lawrence Rowe, who turns 19 next week, be committed to CYA rather than state prison, as the prosecutor had urged.

Rowe, of Rancho Penasquitos, was convicted of second-degree murder Jan. 2 in the Nov. 18, 1989, shooting of Raymond Jose, 17, of Mira Mesa.

The actual gunman, John Michael Mizicko, now 21, of Rancho Penasquitos also was convicted of second-degree murder in 1990 and is now serving a 20-years-to-life sentence at Folsom State Prison.

Deputy District Attorney Gloria Michaels said CYA can keep Rowe in custody until age 25. “The average (term in CYA) on a second-degree murder is 48 months,” Michaels said.

San Diego Superior Court Judge Bernard Revak credited Rowe for 526 days in custody since his arrest shortly after the slaying in 1989, and imposed a $500 fine.
