Lobos Defeat Aztecs for WAC Title

Top-seeded New Mexico swept both doubles matches and took a 5-3 victory over No. 2 San Diego State to win the Western Athletic Conference men’s tennis championship Wednesday at Texas El Paso.

New Mexico’s Gene Carswell, who graduated from Mt. Carmel High, scored a 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 singles victory over Michael Sass, and teamed with Roy Canada to win in doubles, 6-3, 6-4 over Ricardo Herrera and Joe McDonough.

The Aztecs (19-8) got three decisions in singles as McDonough beat Tom Wall, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2; Chris Numbers beat Canada, 6-2, 6-2; and Dax Peterson beat Marlon Mazique, 7-6, 7-6.

Point Loma Nazarene defeated Cal Baptist, 5-4, in a Golden State Athletic Conference women’s match in Point Loma.

Kelly Massa routed Michelle Hernandez, 6-0, 6-0, in No. 2 singles for PLNC (12-10, 3-2). Cal Baptist fell to 11-11, 5-4.

Second-seeded Suella Bowden of La Jolla defeated Louella Parsons of Carpinteria, 6-3, 6-2, to advance to today’s third round in the women’s 50 singles bracket of the National Hardcourt Championships at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club.

Two other local players, Jane Johnson of Rancho Santa Fe (women’s 50 singles) and Fran Wakefield of Bonita (women’s 60 singles) lost in Wednesday’s second round.

BASEBALL

Cal State Fullerton (28-21) scored seven runs in the first three innings and cruised to a 12-5 nonconference victory over U.S. International. Darrin Forster led the Gulls (13-37) with two hits, including a double, and two RBIs.
