ROUNDUP : Montclair Prep Clinches Share of Alpha League Title

Montclair Prep clinched a tie for its ninth consecutive Alpha League baseball title Wednesday. And the Mounties left little doubt about it.
The Mounties knocked out 15 hits--including six home runs--in a 19-3 shellacking of host L. A. Baptist to improve to 8-0 in league play, 15-3 overall. Western Christian, at 6-2, can only tie the Mounties at best. Brent Polacheck slugged two homers and Andy Shaw, Brad Fullmer, Russell Ortiz and Bud Lawrence each hit one homer to support left-hander Steve Cain (6-0).
In other high school baseball games:
Simi Valley 9, Agoura 3--Steve Bernstein was two for four and drove in four runs to lead host Simi Valley (18-4, 9-2) in a Marmonte League game. Simi Valley’s Ryan Hankins had two hits and sophomore Kevin Nykoluk hit his sixth home run to move within one of the school record for a sophomore, set in 1988 by Jeff Sommer.
Channel Islands 5, Newbury Park 2--Junior right-hander Angel Aragon tossed a three-hitter in a Marmonte League game at Newbury Park. Aragon (8-1) struck out seven for the Raiders (13-4, 8-3). Jacob Cruz and Tajah Merrill each had two hits off starter Tighe Harrell (2-6), who allowed three earned runs on seven hits for Newbury Park (7-13, 3-7).
Royal 6, Westlake 5--Paul Taylor hit a two-run home run with one out in the sixth inning to drive in the winning run for visiting Royal in the Marmonte League game. Taylor (3-1) also threw a complete game for Royal (15-4, 6-4). Royal’s Dave Landaker had three hits and Steve Talafuse added two.
Notre Dame 11, Canyon 3--Lou Tapia was three for four and drove in three runs to lead Notre Dame to the championship of the rain-delayed Westside tournament.
Tapia had two doubles for the Knights (13-7). Tapia is eight for his last 11 with a single, six doubles and a home run. Dave Supple and Mike Salas each had two hits for Notre Dame. Sophomore left-hander Chris Leveque (4-1) allowed five hits in six innings, struck out eight and walked four. Oscar Silva took the loss for Canyon (11-9-1).
Crespi 9, Chaminade 6--Brodie VanWagenen and Casey Snow hit home runs as Crespi (13-8, 7-2) stayed in a first-place tie with St. Paul in a Mission League game at Chaminade. Mike Peters went four for five and scored two runs for Crespi and Vic Seper and Bill Canalez each had two hits for the Celts. Jeff Suppan (5-3) went the distance for Crespi.
Harvard 12, St. Francis 8--Harvard overcame a 7-0 deficit to hand St. Francis (10-8, 6-1) its first San Fernando League loss. Bobby Mason went three for four and drove in four runs and Adam Braun hit a homer and a triple and drove in three runs for Harvard (7-12, 3-4).
Hart 6, San Gabriel 3--Doug Distaso had two hits and scored two runs and Tom Wolff tripled and drove in three runs to lead Hart (13-6, 8-5) in a Foothill League game at San Gabriel.
SOFTBALL
San Fernando 4, Cleveland 1--Bernie Samaniego hit a three-run home run in the eighth inning to lift San Fernando (9-7, 4-2) in a North Valley League game.
Alemany 4, St. Bernard 2--Alemany’s Patti Seresi had the game-winning hit with a two-run home run in the fifth inning in a Mission League game.
Taft 12, Reseda 3--Keri Borzello and Stephanie Fontaine each scored three runs for Taft.
El Camino Real 4, Chatsworth 2--Erin McGuire had three hits to lead El Camino Real in a Northwest Valley Conference game.
WOMEN’S SOFTBALL
Antelope Valley 6, Victor Valley 2--Freshman right-hander Angie LePage struck out 10 in a Foothill Conference game at Victor Valley. Carrie Ryan was three for three with a homer for Antelope Valley (23-14, 10-4), which clinched second place in the conference and a berth in the state regional playoffs.
