La Jolla’s Bowden Advances in Hardcourt Tennis

Second-seeded Suella Bowden of La Jolla defeated Lyn Tietz of Oak Brook, Ill., 6-4, 6-2, Thursday to advance into the women’s 50s quarterfinals of the National Hardcourt Tennis championships at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club.
In the women’s 60 singles, No. 6 Liz Harper of La Jolla was among eight seeds to advance.
San Diego State and the University of San Diego’s women’s teams will be making their third consecutive appearances in the NCAA Championships at Stanford May 8-12. USD (12-11), ranked 15th, will open with unranked Mississippi May 8, and No. 18 SDSU (12-8) meets 14th-ranked Tennessee (17-13).
Four San Diego State men’s players reached the singles semifinals in two different divisions at the WAC tournament at Santa Teresa, N.M. The Aztecs’ Michael Sass and Joe McDonough will meet in lower tier semifinals; SDSU’s Ricardo Herrera and Jeff Belloli play in the upper tier.
Belloli and Peterson, seeded second, were upset in the second round of doubles, 6-4, 6-3, by Kevin Ponis and James Routledge of Colorado State. McDonough and Herrera, seeded third, advanced to the quarterfinals.
FOOTBALL
The Chargers signed free agent running backs Tyrone Davis from Grambling and Curtis Delgardo of Portland State. They also announced the release of veteran running back Tim Spencer.
