BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Brown Doesn’t Let Twins Get Comfortable

From Associated Press

Milwaukee left-hander Kevin Brown was out of control at times Thursday night. That made him a little tougher on the visiting Minnesota Twins.

Milwaukee Manager Tom Trebelhorn labeled Brown’s performance in the Brewers’ 5-1 victory “effectively wild.”

Brown, who held the Twins hitless for 5 1/3 innings while walking five, called the performance uncharacteristic. But he wasn’t complaining.

“You really don’t want the hitter to get too comfortable, but you don’t want to walk five people either. I was just erratic enough to be successful tonight,” said Brown (2-0), who gave up four hits before leaving in the seventh inning.

Chuck Crim finished for Brown, striking out Dan Gladden with two runners on in the seventh and earning his third save.

Willie Randolph had two run-scoring singles and Dante Bichette also had two runs batted in for the Brewers, who have won six of their past seven games.

Toronto 3, Kansas City 1--Roberto Alomar--a strikeout victim to end Nolan Ryan’s no-hitter 24 hours earlier--homered at Kansas City in the Royals’ sixth consecutive loss.

Todd Stottlemyre (3-0) pitched seven innings, giving up two hits, striking out four. Duane Ward picked up his sixth save.

Alomar, Ryan’s 16th strikeout victim Wednesday night in his seventh career no-hitter, led off the sixth inning with his first American League home run. It broke a 1-1 tie and handed Kevin Appier (1-4) his fourth consecutive loss.

The Blue Jays wasted no time getting their first hit off Appier. Devon White doubled to lead off the game, ending their streak of consecutive at-bats without a hit at 33.
