Death of David Lean

Regarding “The Greatest Movies Never Made” by Peter Rainer, April 25:
The death of David Lean was a great disappointment to those of us who were looking forward to the completion of his film “Nostromo.” Who else could bring such a novel to the screen? Who else nowadays would even consider it? Certainly no one in Hollywood.
What sources do studios and directors look to for inspiration? Comic books, puberty, old television shows that were stupid 20 years ago, felons. An easily dismissed generalization? Consider two of our supposedly best directors--Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese. Spielberg’s planning another “Zorro” rehash; Scorsese’s next film, “Cape Fear,” will teach us that senseless, stomach-churning macho violence is senseless and stomach churning.
