A 33-year-old man fell from a 70-foot cliff onto the beach and, despite two broken heels, crawled for half a mile until he was found about 12 hours later by a fisherman, the Encinitas Fire Department reported.
Victor Ballard was listed in fair condition at Scripps Memorial Hospital with multiple fractures, according to a hospital spokeswoman.
Ballard told firefighters he fell from the cliffs at K Street around sunset Monday, according to a press release. He was found just after 8 a.m. the next morning.
Firefighters carried him by wire stretcher to the lifeguard tower at Moonlight Beach, where paramedics treated him for dehydration and hypothermia before taking him to the hospital.
