USDA Estimates Orange Crop: The nation’s orange crop is estimated at 181 million boxes, down 2% from last month’s forecast, the Agriculture Department reported. California production was put at 26.8 million boxes, down slightly from last month’s forecast but 64% below the record 1989-90 harvest. Florida’s orange crop was estimated at 153 million boxes, down 2% from April but 38% larger than the freeze-damaged harvest of last season. No estimate was made of Texas’ 1990-91 season production, which was “virtually eliminated” by a devastating freeze in late 1989.
