Seles Enters Mazda Tennis Classic

Monica Seles, the No. -ranked player in women’s tennis, will make her first appearance in the Mazda Tennis Classic, July 29-Aug. 4 at the La Costa Resort and Spa. In 1990, Seles, who became the youngest top-ranked player in history at 17 years, 3 months old, won nine tournaments including the French Open.
Seles’ record last year was 52-6 and she earned over $900,000 to bring her career total over $2 million.
FOOTBALL
The Chargers announced that NBC’s Charlie Jones and CBS’s Dan Fouts will serve as the broadcasting team for their 1991 preseason games, which will be televised on KGTV, Channel 10.
GOLF
Point Loma Nazarene College won the District 3 championships at Sunset Hills Golf Course in Thousand Oaks with a 309-313 victory over Cal Lutheran. Troy Thompson’s 76 led PLNC on the par 71 course. Dave Ferrell had a 77.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
Point Loma Nazarene advanced two singles players and one doubles team to the third round and is in second place after the first day of the NAIA District 3 championships at PLNC. Third-seeded Monica Clancy defeated Michelle Duquette of Cal Lutheran, 6-3, 6-1, and seventh-seeded Kelly Massa defeated Cal Baptist’s Jeanne Webb, 6-1, 6-2, in the second round. Third-seeded Massa and Sue Woodling advanced in doubles.
San Diego State lost to Stanford, 5-1, in the second round of the NCAA Division I championships at Stanford. SDSU’S Tanya Lauer defeated Stanford’s Marlo Carruth, 6-4, 6-0, at No. 6 singles.
SOFTBALL
After a first-round bye, second-seeded San Diego State lost to New Mexico, 1-0, in eight innings at the Western Athletic Conference Championships in Omaha, Neb.
Tracy Vun Kannon scored the winning run from second in the bottom of the eighth. Gloria Marcott hit the ball, which bounced off pitcher Lisa Perettie’s glove. Second baseman Shannon Fitzergerald charged the ball then overthrew to first.
The Aztecs will play Creighton in the consolation bracket today.
