UC Irvine junior Mike Roberts and freshman Brett Hansen-Dent learned Thursday they have been selected for the NCAA individual championships, held in conjunction with the team competition May 17-26 in Athens, Ga.
Irvine’s No. 1 doubles team of Hansen-Dent and senior Carsten Hoffman, ranked 22nd in the country, had hoped to be selected, but were left out of the field. Coach Greg Patton said Hansen-Dent and Hoffman were affected by a selection process that fills the doubles field only after including those players who already have qualified with their team or as individuals.
Irvine learned Wednesday it will miss the team championships for the first time in five seasons.
