Protest at Tejon’s Annual Meeting: Environmentalists protested outside the annual meeting of the Tejon Ranch Co., demanding that the Lebec, Calif., real estate developer terminate its lease with National Cement Co.--operator of a Kern County facility that allegedly burns toxic wastes. Protesters, including members of Greenpeace and a group called Desert Citizens Against Pollution, contend that National’s kiln is the only plant west of the Mississippi River that burns hazardous wastes. In a prepared statement, Tejon President Jack Hunt said: “National Cement has certain rights under its lease and we do not have the unqualified right to force them to stop burning supplemental fuels.” Hunt added that Tejon, 30% of whose stock is controlled by Times Mirror Co., publisher of the Los Angeles Times, has met with environmental groups and will continue “to listen closely to their concerns.”
